Most cleaning products are sold on the promise of a smell. That smell — "ocean breeze," "fresh linen" — is usually the problem in disguise. Synthetic fragrances are among the most common allergens in indoor air, and the very products meant to remove dirt often deposit a layer of volatile chemicals that outlives the dirt.
Indoor air in an average home is now more polluted than outdoor air, and household cleaners are a significant contributor. Cleaning, done properly, is a kind of daily renewal: the goal is to remove the residue of living — including the residue of the last cleaning.

Learning to Read a Label
Before buying anything, learn what you are looking at. The Environmental Working Group's Guide to Healthy Cleaning grades thousands of products for hazards across their ingredients — the same label-reading discipline you apply to food transfers directly to cleaning.
Two shortcuts. First: if a product lists "fragrance" without specifying it, it contains an undisclosed mixture of dozens of chemicals, almost always including phthalates. Second: the most hazardous ingredients in conventional cleaners — volatile solvents, chlorine, quaternary ammonium compounds — are often missing from the front label entirely. The ingredient list is where the truth lives.
The Core Kit: Three Bottles
You do not need twenty products. You need three, and you probably already own them:
- White vinegar — cuts grease, dissolves mineral deposits, deodorizes. Diluted 1:1 with water in a spray bottle, it is a better all-purpose cleaner than most commercial ones.
- Baking soda — the mild abrasive. A paste cleans sinks, tubs, ovens, and burnt pans without scratching.
- Castile soap — vegetable-based soap concentrate. A tablespoon in a spray bottle of water cleans almost everything else, from counters to floors to woodwork.
Add microfiber cloths (they lift rather than spread, and clean with water alone) and a squeegee for glass, and you have a complete house kit. One safety rule matters more than any product recommendation: never mix vinegar with bleach or bleach-based products — the combination releases chlorine gas. When in doubt, clean with one thing at a time.
What to Buy When You Buy
When you do buy, the standard is plant-based ingredients, no undisclosed fragrance, and honest packaging. The formats worth knowing: concentrate systems that replace virtually every bottle under your sink with a few plain formulas, backed by an education library; tablets that dissolve in reusable bottles, cutting out single-use plastic while keeping the cleaning effective; and powders and bars — laundry, dish, all-purpose — made from simple, fully disclosed ingredients with refillable packaging and no fragrance by default. Widely available supermarket brands have also held the line on plant-based formulas and ingredient disclosure. Whichever format you choose, run the candidate through the EWG guide and check the ingredient list before buying.

- Glass and mirrors: spray the 1:1 vinegar mix, wipe with a dry microfiber cloth, finish with a squeegee for a streak-free pane.
- Floors: half a cup of vinegar in a bucket of warm water for sealed floors (skip it on natural stone); a capful of castile soap for wood. A damp mop beats a wet one — less residue, faster drying.
- Kitchen counters: baking soda paste for stuck-on food, vinegar spray for the daily wipe-down, and a separate cloth for raw-meat areas, washed hot afterward.
- Toilet and sinks: baking soda sprinkled into the bowl, a splash of vinegar, a scrub, then flush — the fizz does the lifting. For mineral deposits around taps, wrap a vinegar-soaked cloth around the fixture for an hour and rinse.
None of these are hacks; they are the same chemistry households used for generations, minus the marketing.
How to Actually Clean a Room
Method matters as much as product.
- Ventilate: open the windows before you start, because the physical act of wiping suspends particles.
- Work top to bottom, dry to wet.
- Wipe with a damp cloth rather than spray-and-drag, and let vinegar or soap solutions sit for thirty seconds before wiping — dwell time is what dissolves the grime, not scrubbing force.
